COME ON IN!
This room is where you can write.
The short story I worked on in Nina’s prose class in February won first place in the fictuary.com March contest. I think that speaks volumes about how much her class helps your writing! Thank you!Susan Pick
At just the right time in my process of learning the writing craft, I was fortunate to participate in a class taught by Nina Schuyler and have taken several others since. (To be honest — I take every one she decides to teach.). Her workshops were even more valuable than I expected. In them, I continually learned new aspects of the craft and enjoyed working with Nina and the other workshop participants.Former Student
In my view, a great teacher needs to meet three criteria: broad and deep knowledge of the subject and its application, listening and explaining skills as they apply to teaching, and a love and respect for her subject. Nina has all three in spades.Former Student
Her teaching style involves placing the topic at hand, say “Creating Dynamic, Vivid Characters,” in the context of the other elements of a story and then explaining the key aspects of the topic itself. With that firm foundation, we begin exploring specific facets of the topic and devices writers use. She presents examples from authors that illustrate her points, we try out the devices on our own in short writing exercises, which are then discussed.Former Student
Nina is an excellent teacher — supportive, knowledgeable, and generous. No matter what his or her current skill level, each student receives the information and feedback needed to improve from where they are.Former Student
It is a wonderful experience to learn from someone who is so intrigued with her chosen field. I can't recommend Nina's writing workshops highly enough.Former Student
Nina helped me uncover holes like character motive, desire and intention. She approached each story as a reader with both sensory/emotional/imaginative feedback, but also critiqued my stories with the nuance and intelligence that can only come from a true professional, someone who is also in the trenches of the process, doing the same work. I honestly left each meeting with her feeling energized and excited to keep digging and keep writing and keep editing--as a writer, the most satisfying feelings in the world.Former Student
